These summaries will give you the facts of what has been reported in the articles. You are provided a direct link to the associated articles so that you can go directly to the news source if you wish. It’s also important to note that AI can make mistakes, however I as a content curator place trust in the Perplexity AI platform for it’s ability to analyze and provide solid detailed, and correct information based on publisher’s reporting. I would not place my reputation as a content curator on my own platform here at Surfman.co if I didn’t think these summaries were not creditable for curating select news topics. I believe you could very well get all the info you need about a story from these article summaries without going to read the actual articles, but you have the resources available here if you wish to do that.

The Stories:

ARTEMIS 2 CREW SPLASHES DOWN, ENDING HISTORIC MOON MISSION – USA TODAY’s live blog follows the successful splashdown of NASA’s Artemis II Orion capsule “Integrity” in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on Friday evening, marking the safe return of commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen after a roughly 10‑day journey that carried humans around the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. The coverage highlights Orion’s high‑speed reentry at about 24,000 mph, the critical role of its upgraded heat shield following issues seen on the uncrewed Artemis I mission, and the dramatic parachute sequence that slowed the spacecraft from hundreds of miles per hour to a gentle ocean landing described by Mission Control as a “perfect bullseye splashdown.” It also details how Navy recovery teams and NASA specialists moved in with small boats to secure the bobbing capsule and extract the crew for initial medical checks aboard the USS John P. Murtha, while officials emphasized that all systems performed well and the astronauts were in good condition, capping a mission NASA sees as a crucial step toward future Artemis flights that will attempt a crewed lunar landing. – [Full Story At USA Today]

TRUMP’S TREASURY BOSS VISITS NY DINER, DOWNPLAYS GAS-PRICE SURGE AS BLIP – The article reports on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s visit to a New York City diner, where he promoted President Donald Trump’s economic agenda while trying to downplay public anger over rising gas prices and persistent inflation. Bessent argues that the administration inherited an “affordability crisis” and historically high inflation from the Biden years, insisting that current policies on energy, taxes, and immigration are beginning to slow price increases even as many Americans still feel squeezed. He maintains that gas and energy costs will come down as global oil supplies stabilize, and predicts a substantial drop in inflation in the first half of 2026, paired with stronger real wage growth that he says will improve household purchasing power. At the diner, Bessent faces skeptical voters who say prices at the pump and in grocery stores remain painfully high, reflecting broader polling that shows many people still rate the economy poorly despite administration claims of progress. The piece frames his visit as part of a broader political effort by the Trump administration to reassure consumers, reframe blame for high prices on the previous Biden administration, and argue that relief is coming soon if its policies are allowed to continue. – [Full Story At USA Today]

MELANIA TRUMPS OUTFIT SENDS A MESSAGE. SHE’S A VICTIM, BUT NOT EPSTEIN’S – USA Today reports that First Lady Melania Trump’s choice of outfit for her surprise White House statement denying any connection to Jeffrey Epstein was a deliberate, symbolic echo of a previous appearance in which she promoted protections for victims of image-based sexual abuse, signaling that she sees herself as a victim of online smears and deepfake culture rather than of Epstein himself. The article explains that she wore the same cream-colored ensemble she had on when co-signing the Take It Down Act, a law aimed at helping people—especially minors—remove nonconsensual explicit images, framing her message as part of a broader fight against digital exploitation and misinformation. While reiterating that Epstein did not introduce her to Donald Trump and that she had no involvement with his crimes, Melania’s visual and rhetorical focus was on the harms done to her reputation by manipulated images and false narratives circulating on social media, which she cast as part of a wider problem affecting many women. The piece also notes that this highly curated visual messaging aligns with her long-standing reliance on fashion to communicate political and personal themes, and that by positioning herself publicly as a target of digital abuse, she complicates public conversations about victimhood at a time when Epstein’s survivors are still seeking full accountability and transparency. – [Full Story At USA Today]

MOON MISSIONS WON’T END WITH ARTEMIS 2. HERE’S WHAT’S NEXT FOR NASA – USA Today reports that as NASA’s 10‑day Artemis II lunar flyby mission nears its Pacific splashdown, officials are already pivoting to how the broader Artemis program will evolve from proving out Orion and the Space Launch System to eventually enabling human missions to Mars, positioning the Moon as a long‑term testbed for deep‑space living, technologies, and logistics rather than a final destination itself. The article explains that Artemis II’s crewed flight around the Moon, the first such journey in over 50 years, is primarily a systems and safety demonstration that will inform future landings, base construction, and operations in lunar orbit, all of which are framed as essential stepping stones toward putting astronauts in orbit around Mars and ultimately on the Martian surface in the coming decades. It notes that NASA envisions building infrastructure like the Gateway lunar space station and a sustained presence on the Moon to test propulsion, radiation protection, life‑support, and surface operations in a relatively “nearby” environment before committing to multi‑year Mars expeditions, with timelines that currently target a human Moon landing later this decade and a phased approach to Mars that depends heavily on Artemis milestones and funding stability. – [Full Story At USA Today]

JIMMY KIMMEL DISCUSSES MELANIA TRUMP’S EPSTEIN PRESS CONFERENCE – USA Today reports that Jimmy Kimmel used his “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” monologue to mock First Lady Melania Trump’s surprise White House address denying any ties to Jeffrey Epstein, joking that she “must really hate” President Donald Trump for dragging the controversy back into the spotlight just as the administration was trying to move past Epstein-related headlines. Kimmel quipped that Melania “emerged from the rubble of the East Wing” to demand people stop talking about something “no one was talking about,” and highlighted how she simultaneously denied Epstein introduced her to Trump while plugging her own book as the definitive account of their first meeting. He also pointed to reports that Trump was unaware of her plans to speak, using that to riff on the chaotic state of the White House and to suggest tension in their marriage, and he contrasted her insistence that she barely knew Epstein with the broader public fixation on photos and documents linking the Trump social circle to the late financier. – [Full Story At USA Today]

EXTREME CLOSE-UPS OF ARTEMIS PHOTOS REVEAL STUNNING SURFACE DETAILS – USA TODAY’s photo feature showcases ultra–high resolution images taken by NASA’s Artemis II crew during their historic lunar flyby, revealing the moon’s surface in striking, almost tactile detail, from jagged crater rims and shadow-filled valleys to subtly layered regolith shaped by billions of years of meteor impacts and micrometeorite “sandblasting.” The gallery emphasizes how extreme zoom-ins transform familiar gray disk views into a rugged alien landscape, highlighting features such as boulder fields, sharp scarps, and overlapping impact basins that testify to the moon’s violent past and help scientists better read its geologic history. Paired with context about Artemis II as the first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years, the piece underscores how these images are not just visually stunning but also scientifically valuable, giving researchers new material to study crater formation, surface aging, and potential future landing zones for later Artemis missions aimed at establishing a sustained human presence near the lunar south pole. – [Full Story At USA Today]

BRITNEY SPEARS ENTERS REHAB AFTER DUI ARREST – USA Today reports that 44-year-old Britney Spears has voluntarily checked into a rehab treatment facility about a month after her March 4 arrest in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, a case in which officers said she showed signs of impairment and an unknown substance was found in her car. Her representative confirms she entered rehab to address substance use issues and describes the DUI incident as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable,” adding that Spears intends to fully comply with the law and that this step is seen as the beginning of long-overdue changes in her life. The article situates this development in the broader context of concern about Spears’ well-being since the end of her nearly 14-year conservatorship in 2021, noting previous welfare checks and incidents that drew public attention, and explains that her family and loved ones are now rallying around her, with a support plan being organized and her sons expected to spend time with her as she undergoes treatment ahead of a scheduled May 4 court appearance on the DUI charge. – [Full Story At USA Today]

THE GREAT SALT LAKE IS DYING. CAN THIS $1B TRUMP PLAN SAVE IT – USA TODAY reports that President Donald Trump’s proposed 1 billion federal plan to “save” the rapidly shrinking Great Salt Lake would fund a new Department of the Interior–led program focused on improving water flows into the lake, restoring habitat, removing invasive species, and addressing toxic dust from the exposed lakebed, which scientists have warned could become an “environmental nuclear bomb” for surrounding communities if the lake continues to dry. The article explains that Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and other state leaders pressed Trump for large-scale federal help as the lake hits historic lows, threatening billions in economic activity, migratory bird habitat, and public health with arsenic-laced dust storms. While Utah officials tout the request as “historic,” experts note that truly stabilizing the lake could cost several billion dollars and require roughly 260 billion gallons of additional water—far more than the current proposal can guarantee—especially since many political leaders remain reluctant to mandate serious conservation or reduce agricultural and municipal water use feeding the lake’s decline. The story underscores the political symbolism of Trump promising to “MAKE ‘THE LAKE’ GREAT AGAIN” even as scientists stress that without binding water-delivery commitments and long-term funding beyond a single budget cycle, the plan may fall short of reversing decades of overuse and climate-driven aridification in the Great Basin. – [Full Story At USA Today]

JOEY FATONE TALKS BOY BAND, DEATH THREATS, AND NSYNC REUNION HOPES – USA TODAY’s piece profiles NSYNC’s Joey Fatone as he launches the Investigation Discovery documentary “Boy Band Confidential,” which he executive produced to explore the behind-the-scenes pressures, financial pitfalls, and personal struggles that shaped the boy-band boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, drawing on his own hard lessons about money mismanagement after NSYNC’s peak fame. In the article, Fatone reflects on how quickly the group’s record-breaking success faded, recalls going broke despite massive album sales, and explains how bad advice and poor accounting decisions forced him to rebuild his career through TV hosting, reality competitions, and touring. He positions the documentary as both a nostalgic look at the era and a cautionary tale for younger artists about contracts, trusting advisers, and the mental health toll of teen-idol stardom, while also addressing persistent rumors of a full *NSYNC reunion by saying the members remain friendly and open in spirit but have no concrete plans because of conflicting schedules and disagreements over whether to tour, make new music, or both. – [Full Story At USA Today]

MAGNITUDE 5.7 QUAKE JOLTS NORTHERN NEVADA – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck a rural area of northern Nevada east of Carson City on Monday evening, shaking communities across the region, including Reno and parts of northern California, and prompting a wave of “Did you feel it?” reports to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake hit just before 6:30 p.m. local time and was centered roughly 13 miles (about 21 kilometers) east of Silver Springs at a shallow depth of around 3–5 miles (5 kilometers), which contributed to strong to very strong shaking near the epicenter and lighter tremors farther away. Early assessments from local and county emergency officials indicated no major injuries or significant damage to critical infrastructure, though residents reported items knocked from shelves and minor household damage, and crews planned continued inspections of roads, bridges, utilities, and public facilities out of caution. The event, which generated dozens of aftershocks in the first hours, underscored Nevada’s status as one of the most seismically active states in the country and renewed attention to earthquake preparedness in the broader region. – [Full Story At USA Today]

Below is a look at some other content that may interest you (under construction at the moment).

Lemmy:

Lemmy is an open-source, self-hostable link aggregation and discussion platform, similar to Reddit or Hacker News, but operating on a decentralized network called the Fediverse. Users can subscribe to “communities” (similar to subreddits) on different servers, or “instances,” and interact with users and communities across the entire network using the ActivityPub protocol. This decentralized model offers alternatives to centralized social media by promoting user control, data ownership, and community autonomy.

I recently discovered Lemmy, and although I haven’t signed up for an account there yet, I have been checking in on some of the discussions that seemed interesting enough to follow, or that may offer some useful resources. Below is a list of some of the topics I check in on from time to time.

  • Anna’s Archive is having some tough time with some of it’s domains being taken down. Now is more imperative than ever to get over there and download whatever pdf and epub books you may want. Currently I know that annas-archive.li is working. Please send them a donation to help keep this extremely valuable shadow library online. Refer to Google, Grokipedia, and Wikipedia for more information about Anna’s Archive. Also on my personal website is an extensive Anna’s Archive Search Index I made for use in searching for books at Anna’s Archive. I created it to be used as a guide for some interesting things you could look for and find some OOP (out of print) books. Be aware that the links on that page do not work since Anna’s Archives .org domain was taken down, which is where all of the links on that page pointed to when I built the listings. When time permits, I will be moving that page to this website with the links removed, and search terms available for use as manual text search suggestions. – 2025-01-19-MON-07:29-CST.

Buy Me A Coffee:

Buy the editor of Surf Man a coffee to show your support for this ad-free work, and thank you!!

Currently In Progress:

2026-01-20-TUE-21:17-CST – This website is finally built! Ok well, the layout is anyway. Ignore all content in the sidebar below this section. There are segments copied over from my other website which will be removed soon, or placed on a dedicated page. I am really excited for this step forward toward getting this project on the move. This week my main focus will be on adding all of the necessary pages this website needs. That doesn’t mean all content for these pages will be written, but at least I can put the pages in place.

Editor’s Status:

2026-01-21-WED-09:36-CST – HAPPY HUMP DAY!! – All it took was one short video on Facebook this morning to put me in the mood for listening to some Adam Lambert remixes on Youtube. I got some groceries this morning to get through the rest of this week and upcoming weekend. Just totally random, I bought a new folding chair to replace a sitting chair I acquired a couple of years ago. I like the chair that I had, but I need to make a downgrade to something that is more compact and easier to move when needed.

Closely Watching:

Some things I discovered that I think deserve prolonged attention.

QWERTY PHONES – It’s looking like 2026 is going to be the year that relaunches qwerty keyboard style phones back into the mainstream with devices like the new upcoming Clicks Communicator and Unihertz Titan Elite. I’m a little excited about it. I kind of want one. I’m debating about ordering a Clicks Communicator, but I really like the looks of the Titan Elite.
